Greetings! For 32 years I’ve been a birth professional, starting as a labor & delivery nurse, childbirth educator, doula, and finally as prenatal massage therapist. In the 1990’s there was a lot of fear about doing pregnancy massage. I decided to help remedy this by developing MotherTouch massage classes. In 2008 my book, Nurturing Massage for Pregnancy was published, and two educational MotherTouch dvds followed soon afterward.
Along with doing standard ‘feel-good’ massage, I am also a Holistic Pelvic Care Provider and Arvigo Maya Abdominal Massage practitioner, and am comfortable with all conditions of pregnancy/birth/and mothering! Women experiencing high-risk pregnancy conditions, miscarriage, fertility issues, difficult birth experiences, and hip & pelvic pain can all receive individualized bodywork to help alleviate challenges and support well-being.
During Pregnancy, Swedish Massage offers the obvious benefit of Relaxation! This is no small matter as Pregnancy, Birth, & Mothering takes a toll on women’s bodies and minds. Maternal emotional stress can have long-lasting detrimental effects on baby’s brain development. Regular massage, (offered daily in many traditional cultures!), can help reduce stress hormones and increase the ‘feel-good’ hormones, like serotonin, dopamine, oxytocin.
Posture and hormone changes cause discomforts to hips, sacrum, pubic bone, breasts, and uterine ligaments. Specific Myofascial, Structural, and Deep Tissue techniques can rebalance the bones and muscles. Skilled bodywork can increase comfort through self-awareness, and address common concerns such as headaches, leg cramps, back pain.
Cranial-Sacral Therapy helps gently mobilize the sacrum and spine, expanding pelvic space and allowing baby to move more easily through the birth passage.
During Birth, acupressure and other techniques can stimulate birth hormones reduce pain, and feel supportive, helping many women experience a more satisfying birth experience at home or in hospital. Private couple’s sessions help your partner learn ways of touching specific for your needs, along with special techniques useful during labor.
After birth, mothers and babies need deep nourishment as they recover from birth. Mothers often ignore their own needs though, exhausting reserve energies. Massage is renewing and regenerating. “Closing the Bones” and sealing the energetic doors that opened during birth honors a woman’s birth passage. Abdominal massage realigns internal organs that were compressed for months, helping restore digestive function. Scar tissue massage helps prevent numbness, pelvic pain and abdominal restrictions that may develop later from cesarean section. Breast massage helps prevent clogged ducts and mastitis and enhances a feeling of unity in the body. Those left with perineal scar tissue, birth trauma, or pelvic pain will find that Holistic Pelvic Care™ can restore the pelvic vitality that often goes missing or feels totally different after birth!
The Newborn: The skin is the first fetal sense organ to develop. Skin-touch is actually an essential nutrient for baby’s developing immune system, brain, and embodied comfort. Newborn Cranial-Sacral Therapy can reduce colic, difficulties with nursing, latch, and improve baby’s new embodied comfort.
